Hull Pals Memorial Post. SGT HAROLD ANDREWS 11/980. Born in June 1892, Harold was one of seven children. He lost his father quite young, but his mother Edith, raised the family at 7 Elm Avenue, Rugby Street, Hessle Road, Hull. A Fish Worker on the docks by trade, he married Clara Taylor in October 1913 and the couple lived at 2 Victoria Avenue, Scarborough Street. He enlisted in September 1914 joining the 11th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Tradesmen’, 2nd Hull Pals. His story is that of the Pals. He served in Egypt, on the Somme, at Oppy Wood and Arras, then faced down the German Spring Offensive at Armentieres. He almost made it through. Harold Andrews was killed in action on 5th July 1918 at La Becque and is buried in Le Grand Hasard Military Cemetery; he was 26 years old.
