Appleton, Henry Hodgson

Private Henry Hodgson Appleton (1890-1916). Born Raskelf, North Yorkshire. Son of Mr. James Henry Appleton (1860-1911) and Mrs. Annie August Hodgson (1864-1944), of Raskelf, Easingwold, Yorks. One of six children. He later lived in Hull and worked as a draper’s assistant. Employee of Messrs. Edwin Davis & Co., 42 Market St., Hull.

Hodgson first served in the East Riding Yeomanry in 1910, re-enlisted in 1914, but later ended up as a Corporal, in the 1st East Yorkshire regiment. He was killed on 1st July 1916 during the battle of the Somme.

He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial and the Raskelf Roll of Honour (Contains the names of 38 men from the village that served including 8 died)
