Arksey, Thomas Edward

Withernsea WW1 Memorial, Queens Street. The memorial was erected in 1923 at a cost of £451, the funds for which were collected through public subscription. A service of dedication was held in 1924. Inscribed in four columns, are the names of sixty-four men killed in World War I.

BORN HULL 1895. SSON OF GEORGE CARR ARKSEY (1865-1924) & EMMA HAGGITT (1860-1926), AT 21 WAXHOLME ROAD, WITHERNSEA (1911 CENSUS). BROTHER TO SYDNEY, ROBERT, GEORGE AND HAROLD. SISTERS, MINNIE, IDA AND ANNIE.

WORKED AS A HORSEMAN, AT CLIFF FARM, WAXHOLME.

HE ENLISTED AT BEVERLEY, ON 23/04/1917, AGED 21 YEARS AND 8 MONTHS. EX 38285 3RD EYR. HE ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 20/08/1917. TRANSFERRED TO THE 2ND DURHAM LIGHT INFANTRY, ON 29/08/1917. WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 14/07/1918, AGED 23. HE HAD SERVED FOR 1 YEAR AND 13 DAYS. HE IS BURIED AT KLEIN-VIERSTRAAT BRITISH CEMETERY, BELGIUM. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “EVER REMEMBERED”, UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS FATHER, GEORGE CARR ARKSEY, WHO HAD LOST ANOTHER SON THE PREVIOUS YEAR.
HIS BROTHER, PRIVATE, SYDNEY ARKSEY, 26018, 13TH EYR WAS KILLED, AT OPPY WOOD, ON 04/05/1917, AGED 25.

BOTH ARE COMMEMORATED ON THE WITHERNSEA WW1 MEMORIAL.
