BORN HULL 1885. SON OF JOHN FREDERICK ARMITAGE (1848-1924) & JANE WALMSLEY TURNER (1855-1936), OF 55 ALBANY STREET, SPRING BANK, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS)). ONE OF ELEVEN CHILDREN. HE HAD THREE BROTHERS AND SEVEN SISTERS. THE FAMILY LIVED AT, 45 CLIFTON TERRACE, DAY STREET (1891 CENSUS); 27 LIDDELL STREET (1901 CENSUS) & 35 WELLSTED STREET (1911 CENSUS).
HE WAS UNMARRIED AND WORKED IN A BOOT SHOP.
HE ENLISTED AT HULL. SERVED WITH THE7TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. KILLED IN ACTION AT ARRAS, ON 24/04/1917, AGED 31. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE ARRAS MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING, FRANCE.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON, 14/06/1917, 04/03/1918 & 23/04/1919.
HIS SISTER LILIAN DIED IN 1917.
HIS MOTHER, JANE, RECEIVED A WEEKLY WAR PENSION, OF 6 SHILLINGS, ON 10/01/1918, FOR THE LOSS OF HER SON.
HIS FATHER DIED ON 18/01/1924, AGED 75 YEARS. HIS FAMILY GRAVE AT HULL WESTERN CEMETERY RECORDS HIS SON CHARLEY AND ALSO NEPHEW STOKER, TOM ARMITAGE, ROYAL NAVY, WHO DIED ON 01/05/1917 AND IS BURIED IN HULL.
HIS FAMILY PLACED THE FOLLOWING MEMORIAL IN THE HDM ON 03/05/1917. ARMITAGE – In loving memory of our dear son and brother, Charley Armitage, killed in action April 23rd, 1917/ Fierce and strong the battle raged/Alas! our loved one fell/His Christian sole was not afraid/To take his final breath/He sleeps with British heroes/In the watchful care of God/Day of remembrance, sad to recall/-from the family//
