BORN HULL 15/11/1898. SON OF HENRY ASHBY & JESSIE MILLNER, OF 7, VAULTON TERRACE, CLARENDON STREET, HULL. HIS FATHER WORKED AT THE JOINT STOCK BANK, LOWGATE, HULL AS A CARETAKER AND MESSENGER. EDUCATED AT WARNE STREET COUNCIL SCHOOL & HYMERS COLLEGE, HULL.
HE ENLISTED AT 16 UNDER AGE. RE-ENLISTED IN THE NORFOLK REGIMENT, ON 06/03/1917. ARRIVED IN FRANCE, IN OCTOBER 1917. SENT TO ITALY IN NOVEMBER 1917. RETURNED TO FRANCE IN APRIL 1918. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 21/04/1918, AGED 19. HIS COMMANDING OFFICER, WROTE, ” I FOUND YOUR SON A VERY GOOD SOLDIER INDEED, AT ALL TIMES; THE REMAINDER OF THE PLATOON JOIN ME IN EXPRESSING OUR DEEP REGRET AT SO CHEERFUL A MAN BEING TAKEN FROM US.”
UNMARRIED. HE IS COMMEMORATED AT THE PLOEGSTEERT MEMORIAL, BELGIUM.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 10/05/1918.
