BORN HULL 1894. SON OF WILLIAM HENRY ASHTON & SARAH ANN ASHTON OF 1 HANNAH’S TERRACE, WALMSLEY STREET, HULL. SIX CHILDREN FROM THE JEWISH WACTHOLDER FAMILY LIVED IN THE SAME HOUSE (1911 CENSUS). HE WAS A GROCER’S ASSISTANT CONNECTED WITH HULL’S ROYAL STATION HOTEL.
HIS STEP MOTHER, MRS ANNIE ASHTON, LIVED AT 6, VINE TERRACE, NORWOOD STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS).
HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED WITH THE 8TH NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS. RETURNING FROM THE DARDANELLES. HE DIED OF WOUNDS ON THE HOSPITAL SHIP ‘ARCADIAN’ ON 09/09/1915, AGED 21. BURIED HULL WESTERN CEMETERY. HIS GRAVE READS “HIS COUNTRY CALLED. HE ANSWERED THUS”
HE IS LISTED ON THE WALMSLEY STREET ROLL OF HONOUR PUBLISHED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 16TH OCTOBER 1917.
HE WAS RECORDED AS KILLED ON THE NORWOOD STREET, ROLL OF HONOUR, (HULL DAILY MAIL 27/10/1916).
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 18/09/1915, AND THE HULL TIMES, ON 18/09/1915, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
