BORN HULL 1867. SON OF JAMES ATKINSON, SAND MERCHANT OF HULL. HE MARRIED MARY ANN WOODCOCK AT HULL IN 1887. MARRIED FOR 40 YEARS. THEY LIVED AT 41 SUTTON STREET, HULL. EMPLOYED AS A FITTER AND ENGINEER. HE SERVED AS A SHIPS OFFICER AND HAD WORKED FOR THE ELLERMAN- WILSON SHIPPING LINE FOR 30 YEARS. AT THE OUTNREAK OF WAR, HE WAS ON S/S “HULL, IN HAMBURH AND WAS INTERRED FOR THE DURATION OF THE WAR. HE AA TREATED BADLY IN CAPTIVITY AND HIS HEALTH DETERIORATED. HIS HEART DISEASE WAS ACCELERATED NY HIS HARSH TREATMENT AND HE DIED IN HULL JANUARY 1919, AGED 52.
THERE ARE NO CWGC RECORDS OF HIS DEATH. WHILE IMPRISONED HE LOST A SON AT SEA, AND ANOTHER SERVING THE KING’S OWN YORKSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY. HE LEFT A WIDOW AND TWO DAUGHTERS.
