Audas, Frederick Ernest


2nd Lt. Frederick Ernest Audas (1885-1918). Previously with the 5th Cyclist Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment, he joined the ERY in November 1915. After a period of home service, he joined the 1/1st ERY in the Middle East. On 29th June 1917 he was court martialled for drunkenness and was dismissed from the army. However, he later joined the Royal Engineers as a private and was killed in France on 9th April 1918.Image from ERYC Archives collection.

BORN HULL 25/10/1885. SON OF THOMAS AUDAS (1852-1922) AND EMMA ALICE ANDUS (1855-1950). (HIS SURNAME IS LISTED “AUDAS” ON CWGC RECORDS, AS “ANDES” IN SOLDIERS DIED WAR RECORDS AND “ANDAS”, IN CENSUS RECORDS).

SON OF A DENTAL SURGEON. EDUCATED AT HYMERS COLLEGE. WORKED AS A DISINFECTANT MANUFACTURER FOR ALPINE CO. LTD, AT 5 HYMERS AVENUE, HULL, (1913 KELLY’S DIRECTORY). SERVED IN THE HULL RIFLES AND AS A TROOPER, WITH THE EAST RIDING YEOMANRY AS A TERRITORIAL PRIOR TO WAR.

HE MARRIED, MABEL CATHERINE BRIGGS (1887-1970), AT HULL, IN MARCH 1911. A VISITOR AT 18 REGENTS TERRACE, CARR LANE, HULL (1911 CENSUS)  & LIVING AT 36, GEORGE STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS).

HE ENLISTED IN LINCOLN ON 24/08/1914. HE JOINED THE 1/5TH EYR CYCLISTS, TRANSFERRED TO THE EAST RIDING YEOMANRY.  COMMISSIONED AS A SECOND LIEUTENANT, IN THE 3RD/1ST EAST YORKSHIRE YEOMANRY, ON 11/11/1915. COURT MARTIALED FOR DRUNJENNESS ON 19/06/1917. DISMISSED FOR DRUNKENESS, ON 29/06/1917. HE RE-JOINED THE ARMY AS A PIONEER, TO THE 2ND SPECIAL COMPANY, ROYAL ENGINEERS. HE DIED OF WOUNDS, ON 09/04/1918, AGED 32.

HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, MABEL, AND SON FRED. HE LEFT BROTHERS, THOMAS, WILLIAM AND ROBERT AND SISTER, DOROTHY.
HE IS COMMEMORATED AT TYNE COT CEMETERY, BELGIUM. HIS NAME IS ALSO LISTED ON HULL’S HYMERS COLLEGE ROLL OF HONOUR.
