BORN SWINE 1896. SON OF WILLIAM & CLARA BAKER, OF SWINE, HULL. A WHEELWRIGHT APPRENTICE. HE ENLISTED IN HULL IN MARCH 1915. SERVED AS SAPPER IN THE 1ST/1ST EAST RIDING ENGINEERS. HAD BEEN IN FRANCE FOR 10 MONTHS AND RECENTLY RETURNED HOME FOR 5 WEEKS LEAVE. DIED OF WOUNDS IN HOSPITAL, ON 19/07/1916, AGED 20. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 01/08/1916, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH.

HE IS BURIED AT THE SOMME, LA NEUVILLE BRITISH CEMETERY, CORBIE. UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS FATHER, WILLIAM.

REMEMBERED ON THE EAST RIDING ROYAL ENGINEERS MEMORIAL AT HULL MINSTER.COMMEMORATED ON THE THORNGUMBOLD WW1 MEMORIAL, WHERE 66 SERVED AND 9 DIED.
