BORN HULL 1889. SON OF WILLIAM HENRY BARKER AND THE LATE ELLEN BARKER, OF 20 ST LUKES STREET, HULL. HE HAD SIX BROTHERS, FOUR OF WHOM WERE MARRIED, AND TWO SISTERS, BOTH IN AMERICA. EMPLOYED AS A SOLICITOR’S CLERK. HE ENLISTED IN THE HULL PALS, ON 26/09/1914, AGED 24 YEARS AND 10 MONTHS. HIS ARMY RECORDS DESCRIBE HIM AS 5 FOOT, 7 INCHES TALL, 141 LBS, WEIGHT, 37.5 INCH CHEST SIZE, NORMAL VISION, AND ‘GOOD’ PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT. HE TRAINED AT WALTON HOLME CAMP, SOUTH CAMP RIPON AND AT SALISBURY. HE LEFT FOR EGYPT ON 15/12/1915. POSTED TO FRANCE ON 08/03/1916. PROMOTED TO LANCE CORPORAL, ON 15/01/1915 AND TO CORPORAL, ON 03/07/1916. KILLED IN ACTION AT SERRE, ON 13/11/1916. COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, SOMME. HE MARRIED ALICE ETHEL MAIN, AT SCULCOATES, HULL, ON 03/10/1915. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, ALICE ETHEL BARKER. SHE WAS AWARDED A WEEKLY PENSION OF 15 SHILLINGS AND MOVED TO 11 SYLVESTER STREET, HULL. THEY HAD NO CHILDREN. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 09/01/1917 & 12/07/1917.
Hull Pals Memorial Post. CORPORAL STANLEY BARKER 12/635. Born in 1890 Stanley was one of nine children to William and Ellen Barker of 20 St Lukes Street, Hull. A Clerk by trade he enlisted at City Hall on 26th September 1914 joining the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Sportsmen’, 3rd Hull Pals. One of the Originals he trained throughout 1915 leaving Devonport bound for Alexandria, Egypt that December; but not before he’d married Alice Ethel Maia on 3rd October 1915. His war record is tragically brief- enlistment, shipping to Egypt, promotion to Corporal, and death on 13th November 1916 at Beaumont Hamel opposite the ruins of Serre on the Somme. His body was never recovered and Stanley Barker is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial- he was 26 years old.
