BORN HULL 1896. SON OF THOMAS BARNES (1870-1938) AND ISABELLA ANDERSON (1871-1953), OF 80 ETON STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS) AND 10 MARMADUKE STREET, HESSLE ROAD, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). SON OF A RAILWAY RULLEYMAN. ONE OF SIX CHILDREN. EMPLOYED AS A RAILWAY CRANE DRIVER, LIVING AT 44 WASSAND STREET, HESSLE ROAD, HULL.
HE ENLISTED AT BEVERLEY. SERVED AS A SERGEANT, IN THE 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. AWARDED THE MILITARY MEDAL (MM). KILLED AT THE SOMME, ON 25/09/1916, AGED 20. COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, SOMME, FRANCE TO THE MISSING.
HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON THE ON ETON STREET ROLL OF HONOUR. AND LISTED ON THE ST MATHEWS CHURCH, WAR MEMORIAL, BOULEVARD. UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS MOTHER, ISABELLA.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 03/11/1916, 25/09/1918 & 25/09/1919.
