BORN HULL 1896. SON OF JOSEPH BARR & MARGARET ANN MURRAY, OF 16 RICHARDS TERRACE, BARNSLEY STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS) AND 6 EMMAS TERRACE, NORNABELL STREET, HULL (ARMY ADDRESS). HIS FATHER WAS A GENERAL LABOURER FROM SPROATELY. HIS MOTHER WAS BORN IN LIVERPOOL HIS FAMILY WERE LIVING IN GAINSBOROUGH (1901 CENSUS) BEFORE RETURNING TO HULL. HARRY WORKED AS A KITCHEN BOY AT RATBY, LEICESTERSHIRE (1911 CENSUS) AND LABOURER. A SINNLE MAN. HIS ARMY RECORDS DESCRIBE HIM AS 5 FOOT, 5 INCHES TALL, 34.5 INCH CHEST SIZE, 124 LBS WEIGHT, NORMAL VISION (WITH GLASSES).
HE ENLISTED IN HULL ON 12/06/1915, AGED 19. POSTED TO EGYPT ON 27/10/1915. SENT TO FRANCE, ON 27/06/1916. SERVED IN THE 6TH YORK AND LANCASTER REGIMENT. TRAINED AS A BOMB THROWER. REPORTED WOUNDED AND MISSING, ON 29/09/1916, AND LATER CONFIRMED KILLED SAME DAY, AGED 20. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR 1 YEAR AND 111 DAYS. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING ON THE SOMME.
HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS FATHER, JOSEPH, WHO ENLISTED IN 1915 AND SERVED FOR 163 DAYS WITH THE NORTHUMBRIAN BRIGADE, ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY. HIS MOTHER MOVED TO WEST FARM COTTAGE, GOXHILL, LINCOLNSHIRE AFTER THE WAR.
