Hull Pals Memorial Post. L/CPL GEORGE WILLIAM BARRATT 12/1297. Born in Welton, East Yorkshire in 1887 George was one of five children and the only son of William and Elizabeth Barratt of Elleker, South Cave. A Farm Servant by trade he travelled to Hull on 29th December 1914 to enlist in the fledgling 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, nicknamed ‘The Sportsmen’ and known colloquially as 3rd Hull Pals. He served with the battalion in Egypt from Christmas 1915 until 29th February when their ship left Port Said bound for Marseilles and the train north to Armentieres and the trenches of the Western Front. George was killed in action on 13th November 1916 as the 12th waded through the mud in no man’s land attempting to take German positions in the ruins of the French village of Serre as the Somme campaign ground to its bloody and inevitable end. He simply sank without a trace. George William Barratt is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to those lost in that sector who have no known grave; he was 39 years old.
