Bateman, Louis

BORN HULL 1892. SON OF HENRY PAUL BATEMAN (1863-1949) & MINNIE EDWARDS (1864-1940),OF 140, SHARP STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION & CWGC ADDRESS). HE HAD THREE BROTHERS AND TWO SISTERS. EMPLOYED AS A WAREHOUSE MAN. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 7.5 INCHES TALL, 35-38.4 INCH CHEST, GOOD VISION AND PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT.

HE ENLISTED AS A GUNNER IN THE EAST RIDING TERRITORIALS, RGA, ON 07/03/1910, AGED 18 YEARS AND 6 MONTHS. STATIONED AT TYNEMOUTH. HE REQUESTED A TRANSFER TO THE INFANTRY, AND ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 26/07/1916. TRANSFERRED TO THE 8TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT ON 04/09/1916. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, AT THE BATTLE OF SERRE, ON 13/11/1916, AGED 24. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY, FOR 6 YEARS AND 258 DAYS.

UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS FATHER. HE WAS BROTHER, TO HARRY, DORIS, FRANK (SERVED IN NORTH RUSSIA), FRED (COLLEGE OF THE RESUREECTION, MIRFIELD) AND LAURA. HIS OTHER SISTER, EDITH BATEMAN, DIED 10/01/1917 AGED 14 YEARS. LOUIS BATEMAN IS BURIED AT THE A.I.F. BURIAL GROUND, FLERS. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “BEYOND THE STRIFE”
