BORN ETON 1882, BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. SON OF HENRY & MARGARET BATTERBURY OF WINDSOR. HIS FATHER WAS A FORMER SOLDIER AND WORKED AS A STONE MASON. HE MARRIED AT HULL, IN 1915. HIS WIFE JANE ELIZA COWEY AND DAUGHTER, CATHERINE (BORN 26/11/1917) LIVED AT 64 , BRAZIL STREET, HULL, (CWGC ADDRESS).
A REGULAR SOLDIER. HE JOINED THE ROYAL SCOTS IN 1897. SERVED 18.5 YEARS INCLUDING MAURITIUS, SOUTH AFRICA AND FRANCE. DIED 17/02/1919, AGED 36. BURIED AT HEDON ROAD CEMETERY. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WENT TO HIS WIDOW. HIS CWGC GRAVE, READS, “UNTIL THE DAY BREAKS”.

Died 17/02/1919 aged 36 The funeral took place on Thursday. There was a wreath from the 26th & 27th Sergeants. The Headquarters of Humber Garrison supplied the gun carriage and the firing party. The officiating clergyman was Mr. Anderson of Holderness Presbyterian Church. At the end of the service three volleys were fired and the bugler sounded the “Last Post”.
