Baxter, Harold Frederick

BORN HULL 23/03/1884. SON OF HENRY BAXTER (1851-1911) & MARY HANNAH SKELTON (1853-1929), OF 31 EXMOUTH STREET, HULL AND 6, ROLAND AVENUE, ARTHUR STREET, HULL. HE HAD SEVEN BROTHERS AND FOUR SISTERS, THAT LIVED AROUND THE NEWLAND AREA OF HULL. HE WORKED AS A JOINER. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 4.5 INCHES TALL, 119 LBS WEIGHT, 36-39 INCH CHEST, GOOD PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT.

HE MOVED TO 20, ADAMSWELL STREET, SPRINGBURN, GLASGOW. MARRIED REBECCA CRIPPS MARSHALL (1888-1950) THERE ON 30TH AUGUST 1907, AGED 23. THEY HAD THREE CHILDREN (MARY, HENRY & ETHEL).

HE ENLISTED IN GLASGOW 15/10/1915. INITIALLY JOINED AS A SAPPER, 4766, ROYAL ENGINEERS. TRANSFERRED TO THE PIONEER SECTION OF 9TH STAFFORDSHIRE REGIMENT (PIONEERS), “C” COMPANY. HE DIED OF WOUNDS ON 01/10/1917, AGED 34, AT THE 53RD CASUALTY CLEARING STATION. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR 1 YEAR AND 352 DAYS. HIS ARMT EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, RUTH.

BURIED AT BAILLEUL COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, NORD, FRANCE. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “YOU LIVE IN HEARTS THAT LOVE YOU STILL YOU LIVE WITH CHRIST IN REALMS UNSEEN”

HIS WIDOW REBECCA CRIPPS MARSHALL BAXTER AND THEIR THREE CHILDREN MOVED TO BUTE, ROTHESAY IN 1919.

HE WAS ONE OF FIVE SONS SERVING IN THE WAR. TWO HAD ALREADY BEEN SERIOUSLY WOUNDED., ONE GASSED, THE OTHER RECOVERING FROM TRENCH FEVER. ANOTHER SON , JOINS THE ARMY IN A FEW WEEKS, THE OTHER IS SERVING OUT OF LIVERPOOL, WITH THE MERCHANT NAVY.

HIS BROTHER, PERCY WILLIAM BAXTER (1879-1917), PRIVATE,  23448, LBOUR CORPS, WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 09/08/1917, AGED 38.

BOTH BROTHERS ARE RECORDED ON ST MATTHEWS CHURCH MEMORIAL, BOULEVARD, HULL AND ON THE ST JOHNS CHUCH ROLL OF HONOUR, NEWLANDS, HULL
