James Henry Beal, 1869-1915

BORN HULL 07/10/1869. SON OF THOMAS AND MARTHA BEAL. A LABOURER. EMPLOYED BY MESSRS, T. WILSON AND SONS SHIPPING LINE.

HE MARRIED MARY ELIZABETH BEAL, FROM 47 GILLETT STREET, IN 1895, HULL. THEY LIVED AT CAMPBELL STREET AND 12 CLAREMONT TERRACE, DAY STREET, HULL, WITH THEIR TEN CHILDREN.

HE ENLISTED HULL. ON 23/10/1914. ARRIVED IN FRANCE ON 22/04/1915. SERVED WITH “D” COMPANY, 4TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 09/08/1915, AT YPRES, AGED 45. HE HAD SERVED FOR NINE MONTHS AND BEEN AT THE FRONT FOR FOUR MONTHS. HE LEFT A WIDOW AND TEN CHILDREN.

A COMRADE WROTE ” HE DIED GAMELY AND BRAVELY WITH HIS FACE TOWARDS THE ENEMY…THOUGH WE HE HAD NOT BEEN WITH US LONG, WE HAD LEARNT TO RESPECT HIM AND TO VALUE HIS WORTH BOTH AS A COMRADE AND MAN.” HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE MENIN GATE MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING.

HIS DEATH WAS ALSO REPORTED IN THE HDM ON 19/08/1915 & 06/09/1915, AND IN THE HULL TIMES, ON 21/08/1915, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
