Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE FRED BECKETT 12/14. Born 1890, Fred was the third of six of children to Alfred Sharpe and Henrietta Beckett, of 6 Trinity Grove, Ella Street, Hull. A Grocer’s Assistant by trade he married Gladys Sabrina Dodson at St. Marys on 24th May 1913. He was 23. It had been quite a life. He may have been a simple grocer, but Fred had already spent four years in the army serving in the 3rd Northumbrian Field Ambulance of the Royal Army Medical Corps. He would doubtless have been mobilized anyway, but dutifully enlisted in Hull, on 14th September 1914. He joined the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Sportsmen’, 3rd Hull Pals. Fred was killed in action on 26th May 1916 and buried in Sucrerie Military Cemetery; he was 26 years old. His brothers Charles & Arthur Beckett also served.
HIS NAME WAS LISTED ON THE WALMSLEY STREET MEMORIAL, PUBLISHED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 16TH OCTOBER 1917.
