Bellamy, Charles

BORN GRIMSBY 1887. MR WILLIAM T & MRS JANE E BELLAMY. LIVED IN HULL. hIS NAME IS RECORDED ON HULL’S WALKER STREET MEMORIAL.
Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE JOHN WILLIAM BELLAMY 3/6868. Born 1887, the eldest of three sons to Edward and Sarah Bellamy. John was working as an Oil Miller before war broke out, and lived at 14 Lorne Street, Hull with his wife Mary Ann and three children John William Jnr, Edward and Mary Elizabeth. He originally enlisted in the 3rd Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, but was transferred to the 10th to help fill gaps in the line. He was killed in action on 27th March 1918 as the Pals attempted to hold up the German Spring Offensive west of Ervillers. His body was never recovered and his name is commemorated on Bays 4-5 of the Arras Memorial. He was 28 years old. I always find the men with wives and children the hardest to write. The thought of Mary Ann receiving that telegram and having to explain to young children that Daddy wasn’t coming home, then looking to a future with no support. This is pre-Welfare State remember.
