Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE ALBERT BENN 12/392. Born in Scarborough in April 1880, Albert was the youngest of eight children to John and Annie Benn of 12 Myton Street, Hull. His father passed away in 1911. Albert worked as Labourer until war broke out when he enlisted at City Hall joining the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, 3rd Hull Pals. After serving in Egypt over the winter of 1915-16 the Pals arrived in France early in March heading north from Marseilles to the trenches of the Western Front. Wounded in the shoulder on 8th August 1916 Albert was withdrawn to the hospital centre at Boulogne, to recover and rejoined his comrades a month later. He was killed in action on 13th November 1916 during the last desperate action of the Somme campaign, as the 11th/12th EYR Battalions attacked German positions at Serre, with orders to flatten out the line, removing a salient to their right. Albert walked off into the morning mist and was never seen again. His name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial; he was 36 years old.
