Harry Bennyworth (1869-1918)

BORN HULL 1869. SON OF JOHN & BETSEY (MATILDA) BENNYWORTH, OF 80, WALCOTT STREET, HULL. HIS FATHER WAS FROM DUBLIN. HIS MOTHER WAS BORN IN BOSTON, LINCOLNSHIRE.

HE MARRIED MAHALA EARLES (1861-1936) IN 1902.  THEY LIVED IN GORLESTONE, NORFOLK (1911 CENSUS) AND AT 188, STANLEY STREET, GRIMSBY. HE WAS A FITTERS LABOURER. SERVED AS AN ENGINEMAN ON THE TRAWLER, “DRUMTOCHY”, WHISH WAS MINED OFF THE DOVER COAST. HE LEFT A WIDOW AND DAUGHTER, HILDA. HIS BROTHER, PRIVATE, FRANK BENNYWORTH, COLDSTREAM GUARDS, DIED OF WOUNDS, ON 16/11/1914, AGED 37.

10.1915: Trawler requisitioned by the British navy and converted in patrol minesweeper, based in Dover (Kent, UK). 29.01.1918: hit a mine. Ten crew were killed. There were only two survivors rescued by the paddle minesweeper PMS Goodwood.
