BORN LONDON 04/10/1862. FOURTH SON OF GENERAL, HENRY ROXBY BENSON, OF THE 17TH LANCERS.
RICHARD ERLE BENSON, WAS COMMANDER OF THE 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. HE JOINED THE REGIMENT AS A YOUNG OFFICER, ON 14/05/1884, RISING THROUGH THE OFFICER RANKS. HE WAS WELL KNOWN IN HULL AND OFTEN LED RECRUITMENT MARCHES AROUND THE CITY. HE SERVED IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN & BURMA WARS. AT THE OUTBREAK OF WAR, HE LED THE 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT IN THE BRITISH EXPEDITIONARY FORCE. WAS WOUNDED LEADING AN ATTACK ON THE RIVER AISNE. HE DIED AT ST NAZAIRE HOSPITAL, ON 27/09/1914, AGED 52. HIS BODY WAS REPATRIATED AND BURIED AT REYNOLDSTON (ST. GEORGE) CHURCHYARD, GLAMORGAN, WALES, WHERE HIS WIFE FLORENCE AND THREE CHILDREN LIVED.
HIS PHOTOGRAPH WAS PRINTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL WITH THE NEWS OF HIS DEATH, ON THE 28TH SEPTEMBER 1914. * HIS DEATH WAS ALSO REPORTED IN THE HULL TIMES, ON 3RD OCTOBER 1914, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH.
