BORN HULL 1890. SON OF JOHN & LIZ BILTON, OF ROWLEY, LITTLE WEIGHTON, EAST YORKSHIRE. HIS WIFE AGNES LIVED AT 6, VICTORIA AVENUE, STEPNEY LANE, HULL.
HE ENLISTED BEVERLEY. FORMERLY, PRIVATE, 27069 EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. HAD SERVED 13 YEARS WTH THE WEST YORKSHIRE RWGIMENT UNTIL TIME EXPIRED IN JANUARY 1916.
HE WAS A POLICE CONSTABLE FOR THE NORTH EASTER RAILWAYS. REJOINED THE ARMY IN AUGUST 1916. AND STATIONED WITH THE EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, AT RUGELEY CAMP. HE TRANSFERRED TO THE 6TH YORK & LANCASTER REGIMENT, ON 24/12/1916, WHEN HE WAS POSTED TO FRANCE AND SAW SOME VERY HEAVY FIGHTING. HE WAS KILLED ON 27/08/1917, AGED 27. HE WAS SITTING IN A DUGOUT WHEN A SHELL BURST IN THE ENTRANCE, KILLED HIM INSTANTLY AND WOUNDED ONE OTHER. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 05/10/1917. *
HE LEFT A WIDOW AND ONE CHILD. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW AGNES.
HIS NAME IS LISTED IN THE TRINITY BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE, ON THE DANSOM LANE MEMORIAL & ON THE CITY ENGINEERS ROLL OF HONOUR. HE IS ALSO COMMEMORATED ON THE ROWLEY WW1 MEMORIAL, LITTLE WEIGHTON, ONE OF 15 MEN FROM THE VILLAGE, KILLED IN WW1.
