Born Spalding, Lincolnshire 1872. A Master Mariner, he resided in Hull with his wife, MinnieFoxcroft (1875-1956) and their three children, at 4 Bellamy Street, Hull.
In June 1916, at Happisburgh, Norfolk, England, Joseph was Captain of his ship, Barquentine Schooner Lambit. He drowned at sea, en route to an engineer, alongside his brother James and middle son Charles Henry (aged 17). They are buried at Smallburgh, Norfolk, England
