Sgt, George Blakeney, 8th West Surrey Regiment
Withernsea WW1 Memorial, Queens Street. The memorial was erected in 1923 at a cost of £451, the funds for which were collected through public subscription. A service of dedication was held in 1924. Inscribed in four columns, are the names of sixty-four men killed in World War I.

BORN HULL 1884. SON OF ROBERT BLAKENEY, of 3 KINGSTON PLACE, WITHAM (1911 CENSUS) & 21 BEVERLEY ROAD, HULL (ADDRESS FROM HDM,  04/09/1916).

HE WAS A HULL TENOR SINGER,  WELL KNOWN IN MUSICAL CIRCLES IN HULL AND HOLDERNESS. A SINGER WITH THE WITHERNSEA MUSICAL UNION. IN 1912, HE WON A £40 PRIZE AT THE PALCE IN A SINGING COMPETITION. HE ENLISTED AT MARGATE, KENT, WHERE HE ALSO WORKED AND RESIDED (HDM 20/09/1916). HE FORMERLY, SERVED AS NO:2816, IN THE EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. TRANSFERRED TO THE 8TH WEST SURREY REGIMENT, WHERE HE SERVED AS A SERGEANT. HE WAS KILLED ON 21/08/1916, LEADING HIS MEN, ADVANCING AGAINST GERMAN TRENCHES. HE WAS AGED 32.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 9TH & 30th SEPTEMBER 1916, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. * HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE WITHERNSEA WW1 MEMORIAL.
