BORN WARCUP, WESTMORELAND 1873. KNOWN AS ‘BILLY’. SON OF WILLIAM & AGNES BLAND, OF 14 ST JOHN’S ROAD, NEW SHILDON, CO. DURHAM. SECRETARY OF THE NER RIFLE CLUB. HE JOINED THE NER IN HULL IN 1891 AND WAS MANAGER OF THE NER GOODS STATION, KINGSTON STREET, HULL. HE ENLISTED IN HULL AS A PRIVATE ON 11/09/1914. DUE TO HIS MUSKETRY SKILLS, HE WAS PROMOTED TO CORPORAL AND THEN SERGEANT A FEW WEEKS LATER. HE WAS LATER COMMISSIONED INTO THE LANCASTER REGIMENT. BECAME CAPTAIN ON 31/08/1916 WHEN HE WAS WOUNDED AND DIED THE SAME DAY. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 9TH SEPTEMBER 1916, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
