BORN HULL 1870. SON OF WILLIAM BLAND At THIS ADDRESS. HIS WIFE, EDITH MAY BLAND, LIVED AT 281 HAWTHORNE AVENUE, HULL. A FISHING SHIP’S SKIPPER. LOST AT SEA, WHEN THE ‘HALCYON’ STRUCK A MINE , OFF THE BUTT OF LEWIS, HEBREDIES, 19/02/1917. HE WAS AGED 32. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 19/02/1918.
Halcyon, built by Cochrane & Cooper, Ltd., Beverley in 1898 and owned at the time of her loss by J. Leyman Jr. was a British trawler of 190 tons. On February 19th, 1917, Halcyon was sunk by a mine from the German submarine U-71 (Hugo Schmidt), off Butt of Lewis. 11 persons were lost.
