HE HAD WORKED AS A BUTCHER BOY AND SHIP’S COOK BEFORE ENLISTING. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 6 INCHES TALL, 37-39 INCH CHEST, 130 LBS WEIGHT, TATTOO ON LEFT FOREARM, CHURCH OF ENGLAND RELIGION.
HE ENLISTED AT HULL, ON 10/01/1916. MARRIED MINNIE MAY OSMOND (1896-1961), AT HULL REGISTRY OFFICE, ON 21/10/1916.
POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 24/11/1916. TRANSFERRED FROM THE 12TH TO THE 8TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, ON 06/12/1916, WHERE HE WORKED AS THE BATTALION COOK. HE WAS PROMOTED TO ACTING CORPORAL, ON 20/07/1916. PROMOTED TO ACTING SEGEARNT, ON 20/08/1916. HOWEVER, REVERTED TO RANK OF PRIVATE, AFTER NEGLECT OF DUTY, ON 22/03/1917 (TALKING IN THE RANKS AND OVERSDSTAYING HIS PASS, WHERE HE WAS SEVERLEY REPRIMANDED)
HE WAS WOUNDED ON 04/05/1917. DIED OF WOUNDS, ON THE 25/07/1917, AT NO 11. GENERAL HOSPITAL, CAMIERS, FRANCE. BURIED AT ETAPLES, FRANCE. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR 1 YEAR AND 182 DAYS.
HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, MINNIE, AT 10 AMY’S CRECSENT, SOMERSCALES STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). THEY HAD ONE DAUGHTER, ELSIE MAY, BORN ON 24/07/1917. AMONG HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE PHOTOS, A RELIGIOUS BOOK, METAL RING, A PENCIL CASE, TWO DENTURES AND A SET OF DOMINOES.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH, IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 26TH JUNE 1917. * HIS DEATH WAS AGAIN REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON THE 3RD JULY 1917, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
HIS BROTHER, WALTER JULIAN BODDY, SERVED IN THE MERCHANT NAVY.
