BORN HULL 1887. SON OF JOHN WILLIAM BOLLINGHAM & LOUISE HARRISON, HULL. HE MARRIED EMMA THORP MULLIGAN, IN HULL, IN 1909. EMPLOYED AS A FOREMAN IN A SOAP WORKS. THEY LIVED AT 3 LESLIE AVENUE, LORRAINE STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS). HE THEN WORKED FOR THE HULL OIL MANUFACTURING COMPAMY, STONEFERRY, BEFORE LEAVING FOR AUSTRALIA, IN 1913. HE ARRIVED IN SYDNEY, ON 30/04/1913. RESIDENT OF RICHMOND, YARA, VICTORIA, IN 1914. EMPLOYED AS A POLISH MANUFACTURER. LIVING AT 4 GARINER STREET, RICHMOND, VICTORIA. ENLISTED IN MELBOURNE, VICTORIA, ON 12/07/1915, AGED 26 YEARS AND 4 MONTHS OLD. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT 8 INCHES TALL, WEIGHING 10 STONE AND 10 LBS, 25 INCH CHEST, BROWN EYES, DARK BROWN HAIR, A SCAR UNDER RIGHT KNEE AND CHURCH OF ENGLAND RELIGION. CLEARLY A PERSON OF ABILITY. HE WAS PROMOTED TO SERGEANT, ON 23/02/1916, AND TO COMPANY SERGEANT MAJOR, ON 28/10/1916, WHILE SERVING IN FRANCE. HE JOINED NO: 5, OFFICER CADET TRAINING, AT TRINITY COLLEGE, CAMBRIDGE, ON 03/01/1917. COMMISSIONED TO SECOND LIEUTENANT, IN THE 21ST AIF, ON 01/05/1917. RETURNED TO ACTION ON 14/05/1917. PROMOTED TO LIEUTENANT, ON 27/08/1917. KILLED IN ACTION AT YPRES, BELGIUM, ON 09/10/1917, AGED 30. HIS COMMANDING OFFICER, WROTE TO HIS MOTHER, “HE MET HIS DEATH LEADING HIS MEN AGAINST THE ENEMY. HE LEAVES BEHIND HIM A REPUTATION FOR BRAVERY AND UNSELFISHNESS, THAT ANY MAN MIGHT ENVY, AND HIS DEATH IS DEEPLY FELT BY ALL WHO KNEW HIM. ”

HE LEFT HIS ARMY EFFECTS AND 80% OF HIS MONEY TO HIS MOTHER, AND 20% OF HIS MONEY AND HIS PERSONAL EFFECTS TO A MISS LAURA BISHOP, “TO DISPOSE OF AS SHE THINKS FIT”. ALSO TO HIS FRIEND, FRANK ODGER PEPPIN, 20 LANSDOWN STREET, EAST MELBOURNE. COMMEMORATED AT YPRES. HIS NAME WAS LISTED ON THE ST MARK STREET MEMORIAL IN HULL. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 26/11/1917. *
HIS WIDOW RE-MARRIED AND MOVED TO 11 ALBERT TERRACE, BEAN STREET, AND 257 WATERLOO STREET, HULL.
HIS ONLY BROTHER, JOHN WILLIAM BOLLINGHAM, MARRIED AND REMAINED IN HULL, DYING IN 1936.
HIS TWO YOUNGER STEP-BROTHERS, FROM HIS MOTHER’S, HULL ADDRESS, ALSO DIED IN THE WAR. THEY WERE:- PTE, GEORGE WILLIAM HARRISON, 4TH EAST YORKSHIRES, DIED ON 12/05/1915 IN MANCHESTER, AGED 18. ALSO, PTE, HAROLD EDWARD HARRISON, 2ND WEST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, KILLED IN ACTION, ON 24/04/1918 AGED 19.
