John William Booth, HMS Southampton

BORN HULL 01/09/1874. SON OF GEORGE BOOTH (1854-1926) & EMMA CROOK (1857-1913)), OF CHAPEL LANE, HULL.

HIS WIFE, ELIZABETH ELLEN (NICHOLSON) & THREE CHILDREN, LIVED AT 2, INVERNESS BUILDINGS, HILL STREET, HULL. THEY HAD THREE CHILDREN (WAR PENSION ADDRESS).

HE HAD SERVED FOR OVER 22 YEARS IN THE ROYAL NAVY AND WAS PART OF THE HOME FLEET RESERVE WHEN WAR BEGAN. HE HAD PREVIOUSLY RECEIVED THE PRINCE HENRY OF BATTENBURG MEDAL FOR SERVICE ON THE BENIN EXPEDITION. HE WAS ALSO AT ONE TIME, DOCK GATE MAN FOR THE NORTH EASTERN RAILWAYS ON THE WELLINGTON STREET BRIDGE.

HE HAD TWO BROTHERS AT THE FRONT – CPL.. FREDERICK BOOTH, RAMC, MARRIED, AND LIVING AT WATERLOO TERRACE, WATERLOO STREET, HULL AND DRIVER, ALBERT EDWARD BOOTH, RFA, SERVING IN FRANCE.

JOHN HAD RETURNED TO SHIP FROM HOME LEAVE ON THE 25TH MAY – A WEEK BEFORE HE WAS KILLED. HE DIED DURING THE BATTLE OF JUTLAND, ON 31/05/1916, AGED 42. HE IS REMEMBERED ON THE CHATHAM NAVAL MEMORIAL, KENT.

HE IS REMEMBERED ON ST MARY’S CHURCH, LOWGATE WW1 MEMORIAL. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON CHATHAM NAVAL MEMORIAL, KENT.

JOHN BOOTH’S DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH ON 14TH JUNE 1916. *
HE WAS ONE OF THREE SONS LOST IN THE WAR. HIS BROTHER, TRIMMER, FRED BOOTH, DIED SERVING ON MINESWEEPERS IN 1916. HIS OTHER BROTHER, ALBERT EDWARD BOOT, 2ND EAST LANCS, DIED ON THE SOMME, ON 02/04/1918.
