BORN DRIFFIELD 1890. SON OF DAVID EDWARD BOURNER (1854-1899) & MARY ANN ROBSON (1858-1940), OF 20 CHESTNUT AVENUE, PARK ROAD, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS & PARISH MAGAZINE). HE HAD FIVE BROTHERS AND THREE SISTERS. FOUR BROTHERS SERVED IN THE WAR. THREE OF THEM WERE KILLED.
GEORGE BOURNER WAS A SINGLE MAN. HE WORKED AS A CRANE DRIVER, FOR THE NORTH EASTERN RAILWAYS AND FOR MR J. WINSALL, HOLDERNESS ROAD, HULL.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED AS A SERGEANT IN THE 16TH CHESHIRE REGIMENT. HE HAD BEEN WOUNDED TWICE ON THE SOMME, WHEN HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 13/07/1917, AGED 26. THE SECOND SON TO DIE. “MISSED BY ALL. A VERY CONSCIENTIOUS AND GOOD SOLDIER AND MUCH RESPECTED BY ALL RANKS.”
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 30/07/1917. *
HE IS BURIED AT VILLERS-FAUCON COMMUNAL CEMETERY, SOMME, FRANCE. HIS GRAVE READS, “SLEEP ON BELOVED SLEEP & TAKE THY REST”.
HIS BROTHER, PRIVATE, HAROLD BOURNER, 12TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 19/07/1916, AGED 28. HIS OTHER BROTHER, PRIVATE. PERCY BOURNER, SERVED WITH THE 3RD EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, AND DIED ON 16/05/1918, AGED 23.
