BORN HULL 1876. KNOWN AS ‘FRANK’. HIS WIFE SARAH STANWAY BOYLE LIVED – 9 CONSTABLE STREET AND 6, WALCOTT STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). HE WAS A BRAVE AND SKILLFUL SAILOR AND ONE OF THE BEST KNOWN CAPTAINS ON THE WILSON LINE. FOR MANY YEARS HE COMMANDED TRADE SHIPS BETWEEN HULL AND ANTWERP. HE WAS EMPLOYED DURING THE WAR ON SPECIAL SERVICES. HIS SHIP WAS LOST IN UNKNOWN CIRCUMSTANCES, WITH ALL HANDS, ON 05/03/1917. HE WAS AGED 42.
HIS BODY WAS RECOVERED AND BURIED IN HULL WESTERN CEMETERY.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 7TH MARCH 1918. HIS ONLY SON CHARLES BOYLE, A YOUNG LIEUTENANT, AND HYMER’S BOY, WAS KILLED IN FRANCE ON 23/04/1917.
HE WAS THE BROTHER OF MILLIE, STAN & PTE. GEORGE BOYLE, WHO WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 03/11/1914.
CAPTAIN BOYLE WAS LISTED ON ST BARNABAS CHURCH MEMORIAL & HIS DEATH IS RECORDED ON TRINITY HOUSE ROLL OF HONOUR.
HE LEFT £112 IN HIS WILL TO HIS WIDOW SARAH.
CAMPANIA was a hired Admiralty drifter (Adm. No.2568), built in 1907 of 90grt, Buckie registered (BCK.98). Armed with 1 x 3pdr. CAMPANIA was since April 1915 in service as a netvessel and renamed CAMPANIA II in August. CAMPANIA II foundered on March 5, 1917 in a gale, off St. Abb’s Head. There were 12 casualties.
