SON OF MICHAEL BRENNAN (1866-1933) & ELLEN HARAN (1868-1943), OF 9, CHARLES SQUARE, WINCOLMLEE, HULL (1901 CENSUS), 8, GIBSON STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS) AND 1, CHRISTOPHER STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). HIS FATHER WAS A GROCER, BORN IN COUNTY MAYO, IRELAND. HIS MOTHER WAS BORN IN HULL. HIS GRANDPARENTS LIVED AT 26, SCOTT STREET, HULL.

HE HAD FIVE BROTHERS AND THREE SISTERS. THREE SONS WERE LOST IN THE WAR.

A FORMER DOCK LABOURER. JOHN JOINED THE ARMY BEFORE WAR BEGAN. HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 16/01/1913. HE WAS DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 7.5 INCHES TALL, 145 LBS WEIGHT, 37-40 INCH CHEST, FRESH COMPLEXION, BROWN EYES, BROWN HAIR, SCAR ON RIGHT SHIN, SCAR ON RIGHT CHIN, ROMAN CATHOLIC RELIGION.

HE SERVED WITH THE 1ST YORK AND LANCASTER REGIMENT. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 26/05/1915. PREVIOUSLY WOUNDED IN THE SHOULDER. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 29/09/1915, AGED 22.  HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR 2 YEARS AND 257 DAYS.

HIS NAME IS LISTED ON ST. CHARLES BORROMEO CHURCH, ROLL OF HONOUR, JARRATT STREET, HULL, WITH HIS TWO BROTHERS, MARK AND MICHAEL.

HIS BROTHER, PRIVATE, MARK BRENNAN, 3709, 1/4TH EYR, WAS KILLED AT KEMMEL, YPRES, ON 30/07/1916, AGED 25.

HIS BROTHER, MICHAEL BRENNAN, SERVED WITH THE 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT AND WAS KILLED ON THE SOMME, ON 16/09/1916, AGED 21.

THE THREE BROTHERS WERE ALSO REMEMBERED ON THE ST THOMAS CHURCH MEMORIAL, CAMPBELL STREET, HULL, WHICH WAS DESTROYED IN WW2.
