Brett, Alfred

BORN WHITSTABLE, KENT, 1858. A MASTER MARINER AND CAPTAIN OF THE SHIP ‘RIEVAULX ABBEY’. MARRIED ELIZABETH A. YOULDEN, IN 1877. THEY HAD SIX CHILDREN. AND LIVED IN WHITSTABLE AND DURHAM BEFORE MOVING TO 9 BERKLEY STREET IN HULL. SHE DIED IN 1897. HE REMARRIED IN 1900 TO ISABELLA YOULDEN, AND HAD ANOTHER SON, HARRY. CAPTAIN BRETT, BECAME FAMOUS FOR THE HEROIC RESCUE, OF THE ‘HOPE’, FISH SMACK, CREW, ON 01/10/1911, DURING A HURRICANE. HE RESCURE FIVE CREW AND WAS REWARDED WITH SILVER JUGS AND PRAISE FROM THE DUTCH FOR HIS ACTIONS OFF THE HOOK OF HOLLAND. THE ‘RIEVAULX ABBEY’ WAS A STORES CARRIER FOR THE NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY LINE BEFORE THE WAR. SHE WAS CONVERTED TO CARRY AMMUNITION AND SANK IN THE HUMBER WHEN SHE HIT A MINE IN SEPTEMBER 1916.
CAPTAIN BRETT, DIED ON 08/06/1915, AGED 57. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL TIMES ON THE 19/06/1915, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *

HIS NAME IS LISTED ON THE WALKER STREET MEMORIAL AS F. BRETT.
