Alfred John Briscol, served on HM Fleet “Messenger Hillingholme”. He was killed in action, on 20/04/1916, in the North Sea. He was aged 34 and the first from the village of south Newbald to die in the war. He was married in Hull in 1911 and was well know in the merchant Navy community sailing many times from Hull. He was a member of the National Cooks and Stewards Union and joined his ship in Hull only five weeks before he died. He left a widow.Lilian Sharp and one child. His death was reported in the Hull daily Mail, on 11/05/1916. *
he was buried at South Newbald village, East Yorkshire.
