BORN GRIMSBY 1884. SON OF RICHARD BRITTON & SARAH JANE LEVITT, OF 9, EMMAS TERRACE, MARMADUKE STREET, HULL. HE HAD THREE BROTHERS AND SIX SISTERS. SON OF A FISHERMAN. HE WORKED AS A DOCK LABOURER.
HE ENLISTED IN GRIMSBY. SERVED WITH THE 10TH LINCOLNSHIRE REGIMENT (THE GRIMSBY CHUMS). WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 28/04/1917, AGED 33.
HE IS REMEMBERED ON THE ST MATTHEWS CHURCH MEMORIAL, BOULVARD, HULL WITH 139 MEN FROM THE PARISH KILLED IN WW1.
HE LEFT £150 IN HIS WILL TO HIS WIDOWED, MOTHER. SHE MOVED TO 80, MILL STREET, CLEETHORPES AFTER THE WAR (WAR PENSION ADDRESS).
HE IS BURIED AT ROEUX BRITISH CEMETERY, PAS DE CALAIS, FRANCE. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION READS, “SON OF R.S.E. BRITTON – LIFE’S WORK WELL DONE, VICTORY GAINED, CROWN WON.”
HIS BROTHER RICHARD, WAS COXWAIN OF THE GRIMSBY LIFE BOAT, AND DIED IN 1923, AGED 23
