William Edward Brook, “A Promising Hull Lad”

BORN HULL 1897. ELDEST SON OF GEORGE WILLIAM BROOK & ADA CATHERINE MARSHALL, AT 158, REGENT STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS) AND 6, ATHLETIC GROVE, GORDON STREET, HULL. BEFORE THE WAR HE HAD WORKED FOR THE NORTH EASTERN RAILWAYS, FOR OVER 4 YEARS. HE STARTED IN THE GOODS DEPARTMENT, BUT TRANSFERRED TO THE LOCOMOTIVES AND PRIOR TO ENLISTING HE BECAME AN ENGINE CLEANER, AT THE DAIRYCOATESCLEANING SHEDS, HULL

HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 24/08/1914, AGED 17 YEARS, JOINING THE 3RD AND 20TH HUSSARS. WAS TRANSFERRED TO THE 4TH ROYAL FUSILIERS. HE HAD SERVED ONLY 9 WEEKS AT THE FRONT, BEFORE BEING KILLED IN ACTION, AT YPRES, ON 24/08/1915, AGED 18.

HE IS BURIED AT MAPLE COPSE CEMETERY, BELGIUM. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “THEIR GLORY SHALL NOT BE BLOTTED OUT”

HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON THE WAR MEMORIAL AT ST MATHEWS CHURCH, BOULEVARD. HE LEFT A BROTHER, WILLIAM AND SISTER, ADA.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL TIMES, ON THE 18/09/1915, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
