2nd Lieut, Robert Henry Brown, 5th WRR
Withernsea WW1 Memorial, Queens Street. The memorial was erected in 1923 at a cost of £451, the funds for which were collected through public subscription. A service of dedication was held in 1924. Inscribed in four columns, are the names of sixty-four men killed in World War I.

BORN HULL 1892. SON OF ALFRED THOMAS & ANNIE KEZ BROWN, WITHERNSEA. EMPLOYED BY A LARGE DRAPERY FIRM IN HUDERSFIELD FOR TWO YEARS. HE ENLISTED IN SEPTEMBER 1914 AS A PRIVATE IN THE DUKE OF WEKLLINGTON’S WEST RIDING REGIMENT. HE WENT TO FRANCE IN APRIL 1915. WAS SUCCESSFUL AS A BOMBER ANAD RAPIDLY PROMOTED. HE RETURNED TO ENGLAND TO BE COMMISSIONED INTO THE 5TH WEST RIDING REGIMENT. RETURNED TO FRANCE IN MAY 1916. WOUNDED SLIGHTLY IN THE ARM, SEPTEMBER 1916. RETURNED HOME IN NOVEMBER 1916. POSTED BACK TO FRANCE AS A BOMB INSTRUCTOR. HE HAD ONLY BEEN BACK, FOR THREE WEEKS, WHEN HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 16/01/1917, AGED 24. BURIED AT WARLINCOURT HALTE BRITISH CEMETERY, SAULTY, FRANCE. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “MEMORIES FRAGRANT AND BEAUTIFUL FROM HIS LOVED ONES AT W’SEA”.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 01/06/1917 & 16/01/1918. HIS BROTHER, L/CPL. FREDERICK JESSIE BROWN, KOYLI, DIED OF WOUNDS ON 28/07/1917, AGE 21, AND HAS THE SAME GRAVE INSCRIPTION. BOTH BROTHERS WERE BORN IN HULL.
