BORN EYEMOUTH, BERWICKSHIRE, SCOTLAND 1893. ENLISTED HULL, MAY 1915. TRAINED IN LONDON. SON OF JOHN BURGON & MARGARET ALICE BLACK. BROTHERS WILLIAM AND JAMES BURGON. SISTER MARGARET. HIS MOTHER DIED IN 1909 AND HIS FATHER REMARRIED. HIS SECOND WIFE BEING MARY GARDENER AND IN ALL HIS FATHER HAD 14 CHILDREN. JOHN JR, MOVED FROM BERWICK TO HULL TO LIVE WITH HIS ELDER SISTER AND HER FAMILY. HE HAD LIVED IN HULL FOR THREE YEARS AND WORKED AT MRS ROBSONS, DALTRY STREET. HE WAS DUE TO MARRY HILDA PEACH WHO LIVED AT THIS ADDRESS. (HDM 27/10/16). HE HAD ONLY BEEN IN FRANCE SIX WEEKS WHEN HE WAS KILLED ON THE 25TH SEPTEMBER 1916, AGED 22. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS SISTER, MARGARET MOWFORTH. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 13TH NOVEMBER 1916, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
JOHN BURGON’S NAME IS RECORDED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING AND ON A MEMORIAL IN BERWICK ON TWEED. HIS FIANCEE HILDA PEACH LATER MARRIED JOHN BENNYWORTH IN 1919.
