BORN HULL 24/09/1901. SON OF FREDERICK WILLIAM BUTCHER & MARY ELIZABETH (WASS), AT 4 PROVIDENCE PLACE, NEWLAND AVENUE, HULL. EDUCATED AT TRINITY HOUSE NAVIGATION SCHOOL. HE JOINED THE MERCHANTILE MARINE, ON 18/02/1915. SERVED ON THE STEAM SHIP ‘INGLESIDE’, FROM THAT DATE. THE SHIP WAS SUNK IN THE MEDITERRANEAN, ON 08/05/1918. WILLIAM WAS LOST AT SEA. AGED 16.
HIS CAPTAIN WROTE, “YOUR SON WAS LOVED BY ALL. HE WAS A REAL GOOD BOY AND DID HIS DUTY TO THE LAST, IN FACT HE WAS ONE WHO LOWERED THE ONLY BOAT, WHICH GOT AWAY WHEN THE SHIP WENT DOWN, THIS ACTION BEING THE MEANS THAT SAVED 23 OF THE CREW’S LIVES. THE SHIP WENT DOWN IN 92 SECONDS AND IN THAT SHORT SPACE OF TIME IT WAS HARDLY POSSIBLE TO SAY WHAT HAPPENED.”
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 04/06/1918. HIS DEATH IS RECORDED ON TRINITY HOUSE ROLL OF HONOUR, AT ST JOHNS CHURCH, NEWLANDS, AND IN THE DE RUVIGNY ROLL OF HONOUR, VOLUME 4

The British cargo steamer INGLESIDE SS of 3,736 tons was built in 1910 by Tyne Iron Sb. Co., Ltd., Newcastle and owned by Rowland & Marwood’s Ss. Co., Ltd. (Headlam & Rowland), Whitby. On the 8th May 1918 when on route from La Goulette for Barrow carrying a cargo of iron ore she was torpedoed and sunk by German submarine U-38 when 80 miles Ne of Algiers. 1.
