BORN SKEGNESS 1897. SON OF GEORGE BUTLER AND SARAH JANE CLARKE,  OF 34, REGENT STREET  AND 7, GARDENER’S BUILDINGS, WALKER STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). ONE OF EIGHT CHILDREN. HE WAS UNMARRIED, AND WORKED AS A LABOURER AND FIREMAN AT THIS ADDRESS.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL , ON 05/02/1916. SENT TO FRANCE 17/06/1916. KILLED IN ACTION ON 13/11/1916, AGED 19. HIS NAME IS LISTED ON ST MATTHEWS CHURCH ROH & BARNABAS CHURCH ROH, BOULEVARD. THIS ADDRESS IS FROM HIS ARMY RECORDS RECORDS.

Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE GEORGE WILLIAM BUTLER 14/216. Born in Skegness in 1897, George was the third of eight children to George and Sarah Jane Butler of 7 Gardeners Buildings, Walker Street, Hull. A Labourer by trade he was conscripted on 5th February 1916 and mobilised on the 8th. Within five months he was in France with the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, 3rd Hull Pals preparing to enter the worst battle the world had ever seen. George was listed as missing on 13th November 1916 at Beaumont Hamel on the Somme. The exact location of his burial was not known for months meaning an agonising wait for his parents whose hopes were dashed on 4th January 1918 when it was discovered their son had been buried in Euston Road Cemetery. He was 19 years old.
