HE MARRIED AT ST STEPHENS CHURCH, HULL, ON 12/01/1911. HIS WIFE ALICE SCHAFER (BORN 16/08/1888), LIVED AT TADMAN STREET, HULL, 6, EDITH TERRACE, SYMONS STREET, HULL & 35, PORTLAND STREET, HULL (CWGC RECORDS). HIS ARMY ADDRESS, WAS 6, EDITH TERRACE, SYMONS STREET, HULL. THEY HAD TWO DAUGHTERS, ALICE MADGE AND ANNIE DORIS. THEIR SON SIDNEY, BORN ON 06/05/1915, DIED AFTER 2 MONTHS WITH WHOOPING COUGH (ARMY AND WAR PENSION RECORDS)
HE WAS EMPLOYED FOR TWELVE YEARS, AS A WAREHOUSEMAN AT KING & CO IRONMONGERS, CHURCH STREET, HULL. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 6 INCHES TALL, 34-36 INCH CHEST, 126 LBS WEIGHT
HE ENLISTED AT HULL, ON 16/12/1915. SERVED IN THE RESERVES. TRAINED AT WITHERNSEA. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 22/12/1916. TRANSFERRED TO THE 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. ACCIDENTALLY KILLED BY AN EXPLOSION, ON 22/02/1917, AGED 31. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR 1 YEAR AND 228 DAYS.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 13TH MARCH 1917 WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
HE IS COMMEMORATED AT ST MARYS CHURCH, SCULCOATES LANE, HULL. HIS WIDOW RE-MARRIED – BECAME MRS ALICE SCHAFER AND MOVED TO 43, PORTLAND STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION RECORDS). SHE RECEIVED A WEEKLY WAR PENSION OF 22 SHILLINGS AND ELEVEN PENCE.
