Carrington, Samuel

Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE SAMUEL CARRINGTON 11/575. Born on the 29th August 1892, Samuel was the youngest of seven children to the late Thomas and Maria Ann Carrington of 4 Richmond Terrace, West Parade, Hull. He served his apprenticeship as a Tailor in Nafferton and was employed by Mr Hammond, Tailors, Anne Street, Hull.

Samuel enlisted at Hull City Hall on 27th October 1914 and joined the 11th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Tradesmen’, 2nd Hull Pals. He trained throughout 1915 before shipping to Alexandria, Egypt that December where the Pals helped defend the Suez Canal from the Turkish Army. They left Port Said at the end of February and arrived in Marseilles early in March before heading north to the trenches of the Western Front. Samuel was wounded in the head on 21st July 1916 and evacuated to 54th (2nd London) Casualty Clearing Station where he died the following day. Samuel Carrington was 5ft 8″, he had blue eyes, light brown hair and was 24 years old with his whole life in front of him, he is buried at Merville Communal Cemetery.
His name is recorded on the West Parade Roll of Honour. His death was reported in the Hull Daily Mail, on 16//08/1916. *

His brother, Thomas Carrington, served with the Dragoons and transferred to the Australian Corps. Two other brothers, Charles and Herbert Carrington served in France and another brother, Private, Arthur was discharged with wounds in 1915.
