BORN HULL 1894. SON OF PTE. ABRAHAM, 12TH NOTTS & DERBY, & ELLEN ELIZABETH CASS  OF 17, MARYS TERRACE, ALEXANDRA STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS) AND 65, ALEXANDRA STREET, HULL (ARMY RECORDS ADDRESS). SON OF A BRICKLAYERS LABOURER. HE HAD TWO BROTHERS AND THREE SISTERS. HE WORKED AS A BLACKSMITH STRIKER AND PAPER MAKER. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 7.5 INCHES TALL, 137 LBS WEIGHT, 36-38 INCH CHEST, BLUE EYES, BROWN HAIR, WESLEYAN RELIGION. HE WAS UNMARRIED

HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 2ND SEPTEMBER 1914. FORMERLY, PRIVATE, 12369, WEST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. TRANSFERRED TO THE 51ST  MACHINE GUN CORPS, “C” COMPANY. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 31ST MARCH 1916. PROMOTED CORPORAL, ON 6TH DECEMBER 1915. PROMOTED SERGEANT, ON 10TH MAY 1918. HE WAS ACCIDENTALLY SHOT IN THE SERGEANT’S MESS BY SERGEANT MCINTOSH CLEANING HIS WEBLEY REVOLVER. DIED OF WOUNDS, ON 14/06/1918, AGED 24, AT THE 57TH CASUALTY CLEARING STATION. HE HAD SERVED FOR 3 YEARS AND 286 DAYS. (SGT MCINTOSH WAS SEVERELY REPRIMANDED BUT DID NOT FACE TRIAL).

HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TOHIS FATHER ABRAHAM.

ALEX CASS LIVED SAME STREET & WAS ALSO KILLED IN ACTION.
