BORN BEVERLEY 25/02/1895. SON OF SAMUEL & RACHAEL CHAPMAN – 34 WALKERGATE, BEVERLEY. EDUCATED AT MINSTER SCHOOL, BEVERLEY. ENLISTED BEVERLEY. JOINED THE 4TH EYR, TERRITORIAL FORCE IN 1914. SERVED IN FRANCE FROM APRIL 1915. WOUNDED AT PASCHENDAELE. DIED AT NO:4 CASUALTY CLEARING STATION, ON 28/10/1917, AGED 22. A FRIEND OF HIS WROTE, “HE WAS A GREAT FAVOURITE WITH US ALL AND WILL BE MISSED VERY MUCH, BOTH AS MEMBER OF THE BAND AND AS A CHUM.” HE WAS UNMARRIED AND HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS PARENTS.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 30/11/1917, AGED 19. HIS NAME IS LISTED ON THE BEVERLEY’S WW1 MEMORIAL, MEMORIAL GARDENS.
HIS DEATH IS RECORDED IN THE DE RUVIGNEY ROLL OF HONOUR, VOLUME 4, TOGETHER WITH IS HIS BROTHER, PRIVATE, SAM CHAPMAN, 4TH EYR, WHO WAS ALSO KILLED AT PASCHENDAELE ON 14/12/1917, AGED 19.
JOHN IS BURIED AT DOZINGHEM BRITISH CEMETERY, BELGIUM. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “NOT MY WILL OH LORD BUT THINE BE DONE”
