BORN BEVERLEY 1880. ELDEST SON OF CLARA WALLIS (1856-1908) & LEONARD HENRY CHARLTON (1856-1929), OF 31 PARK AVENUE, HULL. HIS MOTHER, ANNIE WRIGHT (1855-1887) DIED WHEN HE WAS EIGHT YEARS OLD. HE HAD ONE SISTER, MABEL AND TWO HALF BROTHERS, GEORGE AND SYDNEY.
A FORMER SOLDIER. HE HAD SERVED IN THE BOER WAR WITH THE YORKSHIRE HUSSARS FROM 12TH FEBRUARY 1901. DISCHARGED ON 30TH AUGUST 1902.
HE MARRIED LUCY ESTHER ATKINSON (1881-1968), AT HULL IN 1906. THEY HAD ONE DAUGHTER, GLADYS, BORN IN 1907 AND LIVED AT 26 NEWLAND AVENUE, HULL (1911 CENSUS) AND 95, MARLBOROUGH AVENUE, HULL (MEDAL ROLL ADDRESS). HE WAS AN INSURANCE AGENT AND CLUB AGENT CLERK.
CALLED UP AT THE OUTBREAK OF WAR & SERVED WITH THE SAME REGIMENT FOR TWO YEARS. GAZETTED TO THE 1/4TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT SOME MONTHS AGO. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 31/08/1918, AGED 37. COMMEMORATED ON THE POZIERES MEMORIAL, SOMME.
HE LEFT A WIDOW AND CHILD. HE LEFT £668 IN HIS WILL TO HIS WIFE, LUCY AT 95 MARLBOROUGH AVENUE, HULL (PROBATE ADDRESS).
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 16TH APRIL 1918 WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH.
