Born in January 1897, Thomas was the seventh of eight children and youngest son of John and Elizabeth Charlton, of Skidby, East Yorkshire. A Farm Servant by trade he enlisted at Hull City Hall on 24th October 1914 joining the fledgling 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, 3rd Hull Pals. He’d given his date of birth as 1895- he was too young to serve. His secret was never uncovered and he served in Egypt before arriving in France in March 1916. Thomas William Charlton was listed as missing following the attack on Serre on 13th November 1916 and later confirmed as dead, one of the last casualties of the disastrous Somme campaign.
