BORN HULL 1894. SON OF ALFRED & SARAH JANE CHEESMAN, OF 29, SWAN STREET, HULL AND 10, COOPER STREET, GREEN LANE, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). ONE OF SEVEN CHILDREN. A FISH FRYER, BOARDING AT 26 LORNE STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS), AND A FORMER OIL MILLER, FOR PREMIER OIL MILLS, WINCOLMLEE. HE HAD JOINED THE 18TH HUSSARS CAVALRY, BUT WAS DISCHARGED AFTER 12 DAYS IN MAY 1914, FOR EDUCATIONAL REASONS. HE RE-ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 10/08/1914, WHEN WAR BEGAN AND WAS IN THE RETREAT FROM MONS AND MANY OTHER CAMPAIGNS.
DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 7.5 INCHES TALL, 130 LBS WEIGHT, 37 INCH CHEST, BLUE EYES, BROWN HAIR, “HONEST, SOBER, HARD WORKING AND OBEDIENT”.
POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 06/07/1915. TRANSFERRED TO THE 14TH DURHAM LIGHT INFANTRY. PROMOTED TO CORPORAL ON 22/08/1916. WOUNDED IN THE THIGH, ON 11/04/1917. DIED OF WOUNDS AT THE 10TH CASUALTY CLEARING STATION, ON 11/12/1917, AGED 23. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR 3 YEARS AND 208 DAYS AND DIED ON THE EVE OF HIS LEAVE.
HE IS BURIED AT LIJSSENTHOEK MILITARY CEMETERY, BELGIUM. HIS DETH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 08/01/1918. *
