BORN HULL 1894. ELDEST SON OF EDITH & THE LATE FERDINAND CHEETHAM (1869-1913), AT 43 BACHELER STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). BROTHER TO FERDINAND AND REGINALD CHEETHAM. HE ALSO LIVED AT 16 MALM STREET, HULL. (1918 MILITARY VOTERS ADDRESS). BEFORE THE WAR, HE WORKED AS A CLERK FOR A SHIP OWNER. HE ENLISTED IN HULL. EX PRIVATE, 1466, HAMPSHIRE REGIMENT. TRANSFERRED AS LANCE CORPORAL, TO THE 11TH SOMERSET LIGHT INFANTRY. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 23/10/1918, AGED 24. UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE RETURNED TO HIS WIDOWED MOTHER. HE IS BURIED IN BELGIUM, AT TOURNAI COMMUNAL CEMETERY ALLIED EXTENSION. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “UNTIL THE DAY BREAKS – MOTHER”
