BORN HULL 1888. SON OF JAMES & ANNIE MARIA CHESTER, OF 45, GRANVILLE STREET AND 4, MINNIE GROVE, WALTON STREET, HULL. HE HAD TWO SISTERS.
HE MARRIED AT HULL, IN 1913. HIS WIFE GLADYS ENID THORLEY & 3 CHILDREN, LIVED AT 81, MELROSE STREET, HULL AND LATER MOVED TO 63, BANNISTER STREET AND 51 ARTHUR STREET, WITHERNSEA, AFTER HIS DEATH (WAR PENSION ADDRESSES).
HE WAS A SHIP OWNERS CLERK WHO HAD SERVED IN THE EAST YORKSHIRE TERRITORIALS BEFORE THE WAR.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 16/11/1914. SERVED IN EGYPT. PROMOTED TO SERGEANT, IN FRANCE, ON 16/09/1916. KILLED IN ACTION, AT SERRE, ON 13/11/1916, AGED 28. HIS ONLY ARMY EFFECTS WERE A BROKEN FLASH LAMP AND ARMY DISC. THEY WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW.
HE IS RECORDED ON ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH MEMORIAL, NEWINGTON, HULL. ALSO LISTED ON THE WILSON LINE CRICKET & ATHLETIC CLUB’S ROLL OF HONOUR. HE IS BURIED IN FRANCE, AT QUEENS CEMETERY, PUISIEUX. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “SLEEPING WITH ENGLAND’S HEROES IN THE WATCHFUL CARE OF GOD DEARLY LOVED, ENID”
